When a Woman Loves a Man

Marzo 22, 2009

by David Lehman dscn1621

When she says margarita she means daiquiri.
When she says quixotic she means mercurial.
And when she says, "I'll never speak to you again,"
she means, "Put your arms around me from behind
as I stand disconsolate at the window."

He's supposed to know that.

When a man loves a woman he is in New York and she is in Virginia
or he is in Boston, writing, and she is in New York, reading,
or she is wearing a sweater and sunglasses in Balboa Park and he
    is raking leaves in Ithaca
or he is driving to East Hampton and she is standing disconsolate
at the window overlooking the bay
where a regatta of many-colored sails is going on
while he is stuck in traffic on the Long Island Expressway.

When a woman loves a man it is one ten in the morning
she is asleep he is watching the ball scores and eating pretzels
drinking lemonade
and two hours later he wakes up and staggers into bed
where she remains asleep and very warm.

When she says tomorrow she means in three or four weeks.
When she says, "We're talking about me now,"
he stops talking. Her best friend comes over and says,
"Did somebody die?"

When a woman loves a man, they have gone
to swim naked in the stream
on a glorious July day
with the sound of the waterfall like a chuckle
of water rushing over smooth rocks,
and there is nothing alien in the universe.

Ripe apples fall about them.
What else can they do but eat?

When he says, "Ours is a transitional era,"
"that's very original of you," she replies,
dry as the martini he is sipping.

They fight all the time
It's fun
What do I owe you?
Let's start with an apology
Ok, I'm sorry, you dickhead.
A sign is held up saying "Laughter."
It's a silent picture.
"I've been fucked without a kiss," she says,
"and you can quote me on that,"
which sounds great in an English accent.

One year they broke up seven times and threatened to do it
    another nine times.

When a woman loves a man, she wants him to meet her at the
airport in a foreign country with a jeep.
When a man loves a woman he's there. He doesn't complain that
    she's two hours late
and there's nothing in the refrigerator.

When a woman loves a man, she wants to stay awake.
She's like a child crying
at nightfall because she didn't want the day to end.

When a man loves a woman, he watches her sleep, thinking:
as midnight to the moon is sleep to the beloved.
A thousand fireflies wink at him.
The frogs sound like the string section
of the orchestra warming up.
The stars dangle down like earrings the shape of grapes.

I went to Morocco the last week, that was so incredible for me I went with two amazing friends from USA, they are Cristina the writer and Andrew the future doctor truly I love them , I share one part of my life with this two guys … we had a really big Experience there,  in so many aspects.

February 13:

Today we went to a restaurant in front of the central square, we had a yummy brunch I ate Taginne or  something, the truth is I don´t remember how write the name.

Taginne a typical food from Morocco

The town is amazing but a the same time awful, all the people there is trying to cheating you … you can find in the central square people with blond Monkeys and enchanted snakes, incredibles-dentist, etc.

The town in Marrakesh

The town in Marrakesh

Whole the time you must to pay  for take a picture, that is the bussines.

while we were walking for the downtown, all the people were asking you.. are you from Spain, English, Arabic, It does´t matter your natioanlity they can speak just the necessary for sell junk. at the same time people like kid offer you some kind of drugs, I don`t saw a lot of police-man around the town.

after the round trip for the town, we went to the supermarket for buy somethings for the dinner, well we bought thing such a Camemebert cheese, bread, Coca-cola, water.
Finally in the roof of the hostel, we started to eat first the bread was horrible, and the cheese was terrible. the bread had taste like anis and some seeds inside. my option drink Coca-cola.

a can of Coca cola

A can of Coca cola

The second day was an adventure in a 100%, we went to Asni, that is a city around 100 km of distance from Marrakesh, so we went by Taxi and here we had a first problem , we were in one taxi for goto Asni, but the taxi-driver whole the time is asking to us, if we would like goto other place for 100 DH more, and at the same time we were telling him. “NO, WE WANT TO GOTO ASNI AND THAT IS ALL”. so finally we were in Asni for 300 DH, that is like 30€ or $24.000 chilean pesos.

and here we go, after to get of from the taxi, we meet two beerbeer guys, they could speak English and a few word in Spanish, so in this moment e say: “we don’t have money, thank you, we are here just for walk”, but they told us : is not for money just for exchange of cultures.(That was a holy crap)

this two guys were from Asni, authentic beerbeer people, the first one, was black, thin, no frontal teeth, his name is Ahmet, and the second one were the same but his name is Mohamet.
they show us the market from the village, this market is open just one day per week so we had lucky to know it, now the five person were walking talking about America y Morocco, walking after of a couple of minutes Ahmet told us:

Hey guys, the truth is that for me is so difficult remember your names, therefore now you:

Phillipe : are Mohamut.
Andrew: are Hamut.
Cristina: are Fatima.

so know we are three American people with beerbeer names. that is not usually. What is the next step? change my passport, like “the last king of Scotland”.

After to walk around the market, Mohamut tols us: now you are my family, Mahamut , hamut and Fátima, we will goto my house I will introduce my wife slave and my daughter, drink tea.

Going to Mohamet's house

Going to Mohamet's house

So, after two hours, Mohamut made tea for us, show pictures about his family, later Mohamut ask us if he can show us his work, we say of course is not a problem, Mohamet works with metals making some junk from Sahara or little box of beerbeer metal, every was ok, until Fátima ask to Hamut “how much is it”, hamut say: that is the work of Mohamet , wait and ask him.

Mohamet so smart , say, ok wait Hamut what do you want, and Mahamut choose something, (in that moment we were thinking : Ok, we must to buy something for the hospitality of Mohamet).
soooooooooo, how much is it?? , 400 DH Fátima, 300 DH, Hamut and 400 DH Mahamut, that is so expensive man! this guy was cheating us.
After of this shameful scene, we went to the mountains Atlas the big one has 4200 mts in the top, we were walking for around two hours.

In the afternoon, we went to MC Donnals for eat something, I remember in that moment we were talking about all our story of the day, and later we were talking about valentin’s day , drew far away from Jenna and Felipe from Bri, we tried to send an email to them, but the keyboard was in Arabic, the publich phones works with one kind of card. we spend this day thinking of our loves! supporting each an other.

at night we went to an hotel for drink some beers in the bar, we found one pretty well, we were talking out side, next to one beauty pool, talking on English about the life and the very good questions of Felipe like:

What was your best moment in you life?

What was your worst moment in you life?

Moment: this word remind me one song or dessert.( well joke from the trip).

February 15:

On this day, we just walk around the city, we went to one un-touristic market outside of the city, like in the limiters, we walk whole the day, in the market you can find just Chucherias, later we had a brunch in one restaurant in front of the central square, we ate in the roof, that was great and we can see how all the were walking while all the Maroquies were trying to cheating them, that was cool because Drew has a really good camera with one big zoom, so I went to the midlee of the square just for cheat some Maroquies, talking in front the monkeys for example, and in this moment Drew from the roof was taking a lot pictures just for free!
After that I snap and smile for the last picture trying to show “We did it”.

Hi mister lord-monkey I comming to cheat you

Hi mister lord-monkey I comming to cheat you

He love the Monkey, blond monkey?

He loves the Monkey, blond monkey?

I snap, we did it!!!

I snap, we did it!!!

I ate couscous.

we keep walking… at night we had the last dinner in Morocco in one nice place, we ate Tagine again (the typical food from there, is the dish of my second picture).

after to the dinner we went to the hostel by Taxi , and here our new cheat, let me explain this:

before to get on in this taxi, we get on in other one the price for all the road trip was 10 DH or something, this trip was more short than the last one, because we were more closer to the Hostel, so in front of the Hostel, Drew ask him How much is it? and he told us:

How much do you want to pay me? Ohhh gosh!
for sure if that is a option the choice is 0 bucks

But we were so happy with the dinner for that, just we say 20 DH, and the &%$ man told us, no no no “more” ….
ahhahaha, we paid like 30DH three times more that the last Taxi.

So, the last day was the most boring (train to the airport in Casablanca, fly to Madrid)  . We left Marrakech at 7 am in the train, and the three of us shared a compartment with a Moroccan girl of about our age.  After an hour of tired silence, we began speaking with her.  Her name was Kenza, and she was a modern-style  Moroccan woman with a harrowing story.  In a combination of French and English, she related to us her tale of refusing a marriage arranged by her family to a Casanova in Casablanca. that was hard for me , listend a real story, sharing our thought, and learning more about the morocco´s  culture.

before to finish my report, we went to one museum in Morocco, I don´t remember the name ,but I have the ticket in my sis room, so we spend there like 2 or maybe 2 hours and half, talking , making pictures, Felipe talking with the guard of the badroom, Cristina writing, drinking water,  whatever….

I miss you, always I was thinking of you

I miss you, always I was thinking of you

my friends, we went to Morocco together,  we were walking for the same streets , talking , laughing , eating, we past the same pitfalls… :-) .
we had the same stamp in our passport,  and the same moments in our pages wrote in our souls…. we will meet again… I know…
In December in the States and 2010 the big road trip in Chile.
